Hawkers have impelled a county government to involve them in development of policies that affect their work.
Traders under the Central Organisation of Hawkers of Kenya had, in March 2019, presented a petition seeking involvement of their members in decision making to the Clerk of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly. The petition did not invoke any action and neither did the organisation receive any feedback. It is on this basis that the group filed a complaint with the CAJ Eldoret Branch Office.
The Commission by way of inquiry raised the issue with the Clerk of Uasin Gishu County Assembly which led to the consideration and tabling of the petition before the county assembly. The organisation was subsequently given an opportunity to make their submissions before the Trade and Industrialisation Committee on 17th October 2019.
Public participation is one of the principles of governance underscored in the Constitution of Kenya. It provides a structured way for citizens and various groups to interact and share their views thereby influencing policy.
